Week 2- Post 1 of 3
Subjective claims are based off of a person's personal beliefs or standards. Objective claims on the other hand, are not based off of one person's beliefs or standards, instead it is impersonal. I was talking with my uncle the other day and we came across the subject of education and college. Though he thinks people need to go to college, he thinks it is the most stupid idea ever. He says that once people graduate they will be more stupid and have less common sense than before they even went to college. The reason being is he believes that in college they only teach people to become greedy, unthoughtful people. My uncles thoughts on "greedy" and "unthoughtful" people is all personal and can be different for other people. (This is my example of a subjective claim) One day, my boyfriend and I were conversing about almost everything. We began to talk about religion. My boyfriend claimed that religion is geographically based. His examples to back up his claim were: it depends on where a person was born, and what kind of culture a person was raised in. If we look at the world, the Middle Easts main religion is Islam, Europes main religion is Christianity, and China's main religion is Buddhism. Not only does my boyfriend believe this but so do numerous people. Even I do now. (This is an example of an objective claim)

Hey!
ReplyDeleteSo I completely agree with you on your first example that it's a subjective claim because one could debate whether it's true or false among many people. Like me, I dont agree with your uncle lol. Your second example, I am not too sure about because I feel like it could subjective too. The reason I think this is because not all Middle East main religion is Islam....ie, Palestine has Isreali's who are Jewish. Syria has a mix of christians. I not 100% sure about your second example. But nice detailed examples though.
Thanks! When I researched Middle East religions the one's that have the majority of Muslim I found were: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia just to name a few.
ReplyDeleteI do not like your unlce's reasoning haha I believe that college is a good place to learn about the world and it makes you smarter when you go to college.
ReplyDeleteYour uncle means well but he needs to realize that many people attend college. If that's the case, then there are not a lot of people that are smart in this world.
The second can also be a subjective claim. But religion is a very important aspect in our life. I'm Roman Catholic and our reliance towards our church is very important. Love the blog post! Keep it up and Let me know about our group project assignment!
Thanks again!!
